This was the comedy romantic movie I actually enjoyed a lot. In the same time, I learnt from Ghosts of Girlfriends Past a basic but very important life rule. In life you get only a few chances, a few lucky trains to catch. If you miss them, your life can turn out completely different. In your romance life, this can mean that you will end up alone or with the wrong person. You have to recognise these lucky strikes and take action at exactly the right moment. If you wait too much or you hurry, you will lose it. A lot of people don't know this rule, I mean how many divorces we see every day...
Matthew McConaughey plays in Ghosts of Girlfriends Past your typical Casanova. It's not really that hard for McConaughey to play such roles. I'm hoping his real life is not that shallow like in his movies. Great looking, sports type, lots of money, successful, he gets all the pretty girls without any efforts. Words like commitment or love mean nothing to him. Of course, this attitude has its reasons, his first relationship with a girl, Jennifer Garner, ended up badly. Invited at his brother's wedding, he meets Jennifer again and relives the happy times together.
A very interesting role has Michael Douglas. He was Matthew's mentor, the uncle that had all the women, but died alone, with no one at his funeral. Douglas appears now as a ghost and tries to teach him a few afterlife revelations. I'm sure Michael Douglas enjoyed very much playing this character, remembering the good old Basic Instinct days?
There are very good dialogs in this film, you'll get a lot of laughs, you are really in good hands, Mark Waters did a great job directing this movie. This is a perfect movie for a sunday night with your girlfriend or boyfriend, and definitely worth having in your bluray collection. I'm looking right now at Matthew McConaughey movies list and yeah, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past is one of his best so far, along with Two for the Money (Al Pacino's co-star) or Reign of Fire.
Don't mind the critics or bad reviews, go in with your eyes open, you might learn something.
